So the simplest explanation of Hawksmoor is that it is the story of an architect called Nicholas Dyer, who seeks to commit ritual murders in order to dedicate the churches he is building to Satan. It is also the story of a detective named Nicholas Hawksmoor, who 300 years later, is solving a string of mysterious murders at several churches. And beyond that... well, it's a mind fuck of a book that I adore. I'd love anything with these the two of them - the light and the shadow, the rational one and the mystic, the seeker of order and the devotee of chaos. Narrative sense, logical chronology, definitive characterization – all can be thrown out the window here.

This was one of my favorite movies when I was younger and while I confess that I was definitely all about Paula and Brian back then, nowadays my mind turns towards thinking about a different sort of pairing. I don't know why – something about the brief but memorable interactions between Charles Boyer and Joseph Cotten just gives me ideas. I mean you can't give me a line of dialogue like “I knew from the first moment I saw you that you were dangerous to me” and not expect me to wonder how that line might be used in different contexts.
So there's a lot of canon-divergent ideas I have here. What if the roles were slghtly reversed and Brian was the one that Gregory was trying to manipulate to get the jewels from (ooh, a detective Paula would be lovely as well)? Or what if Gregory and Brian knew each other from before – perhaps Gregory had used Brian's attachment towards him in the past and now Brian wants to reveal who he really is, but Gregory points out that their previous relationship might not be looked so favorably on in certain societies and really, does Brian want to risk his entire life for the sake of a few jewels (and maybe just one murder)? Maybe even something where things go poorly at the end and Gregory escapes with both the jewels and Brian and claims both to celebrate his victory.

I've always been particularly fond of Josephine Tey's novel, Brat Farrar, but I never realized just quite how... interesting it could be until Hammer Films got a hold of it and decided to turn it from a mystery about a family dealing with a supposed long-lost relative returned from the dead into a psychosexual thriller with Oliver Reed as Simon alternately menacing and flirting with both his sister and “brother.” Yes, it does turn out that the brother, Tony, isn't really related, but then you watch the finale where Simon's tied up “Tony” up in the chapel while he plays the organ for the real Tony (now a skeleton) and informs “Tony” that they've decided he should join them and you realize that incest is in the eye of the beholder and Simon is all about it.
So I'd love something that really delves on the implications there – it's pretty clear that one level Simon definitely knows that “Tony” isn't really his brother, since you know, he killed him, but it's also pretty clear that he'd be fairly happy if he was. Maybe the lines start to blur in and “Tony” gets lost in the role with Simon encouraging it by mindfucking/gaslighting him. Or maybe it really does turn out that Tony is related, whether he's a distant relation or something quite closer. Also, supernatural goings-on would be fun – ghosts seem to be a natural fit, but hey, there's always vampires and Oliver Reed did make a splendid werewolf as well.

Scream of the Wolf was an ABC Movie of the Week (available on YouTube now) and I really think I missed out, because back then, Dan Curtis could apparently just say “I want to adapt this short story from this guy who writes tons of werewolf stories, only I want to make it even more homoerotic than it already is. Did I mention there's canon arm wrestling?” Since it's the 70s, they agree and cast Peter Graves and Clint Walker in the roles of a retired hunter investigating mysterious beast attacks and his friend who doesn't give a shit about the murders, he just wants his best buddy to start hunting again. Just the two of them. Two manly men alone.
Honestly, I really wanted John and Byron to just team up together in the end. Maybe the wolf Byron was bitten by really turned him into a werewolf and he's got other plans for John besides just arm wrestling/drinking/ditching your girlfriend for manly bonding? After all, he really did want to hunt with John and if he won't do it as a human? Or maybe Byron's not the villain at all, merely someone taking advantage of the situation until John gets into trouble and then all bets are off. Just – there's a reason everyone remarks on the undertones of the movie in the IMDB reviews and I'd love to see it become text rather than subtext.
